Women working across the housing sector – from graduate trainees to executive directors – gathered on the evening 13th December at One Housing’s Arlington Conference Centre to hear from inspirational female leaders. Attendees included representatives from large and small housing associations, the National Housing Federation and the Greater London Authority.

With only 34% of housing associations led by women, discussions on the night focused on breaking down barriers women face to senior leadership positions. Panellists also shared their career journeys, outlining the importance of personal development, mental resilience and mentoring.

Sponsored by law firm Penningtons Manches, the panel featured Samantha Herelle, Leadership 2025 Participant and Director of Operations at Mount Green; Ria Bailes, Group Director of People & Change at One Housing; Linda Storey, Head of Social Housing at Penningtons Manches; and Ebele Akojie, Financial Strategy & Operations Director at Notting Hill Genesis.

The event also showcased One Housing’s Women in Leadership Apprenticeship which is being developed to tackle the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions. The programme is linked to One Housing’s successful Chartered Management Institute certified apprenticeship diploma programme and enables aspiring female leaders to develop world class management skills alongside receiving guidance on career progression.

Ria Bailes, Head of People and Change at One Housing, said:

“At One Housing we are working to ensure that all employees, regardless of gender, are able to thrive. Initiatives like our Women in Leadership Apprenticeship will enable even more women to develop their careers and help us provide great services to our residents.”

Linda Storey, Head of Social Housing at Penningtons Manches, said:

“We’re delighted to support One Housing Group at their Women in Leadership event. Penningtons Manches is committed to assisting women reach their full potential and progress into leadership roles at the highest level.”
