Arlington's had a makeover

Volunteers from KPF architects create an idyllic roof garden in the heart of Camden.

On Wednesday 26 April, volunteers from KPF Architects designed and created a serene garden on Arlington’s roof.

The volunteers who gave the roof garden a serious makeover came through one of our volunteering partners, Volunteer Centre Camden. The centre has launched a new Team UP: business volunteering service, which supports local businesses who want to give back to their communities through corporate volunteering.

The fantastic volunteers designed the layout of the garden with technical landscape drawings, paid for all the materials and did all the work in the April showers. Then, they kindly donated all the gardening equipment to Arlington!

The roof garden is now transformed from an empty space in need of some tender loving care into an idyllic garden retreat in the heart of Camden.

Paula Hughes, Service Development and Partnership Manager at Arlington, has now developed a programme which will support our customers to run a therapeutic gardening project to nurture and maintain the garden.

Linda Kelly, Personalisation Coordinator, who works closely with Volunteer Centre Camden on volunteering opportunities with Housing Care & Support said:

“The volunteers have not only transformed the garden, but also the lives of our Arlington customers for the better. Seeing the colourful plants and being able to smell the fragrance of the herbs will have a positive impact on their well-being.

“We’re very grateful to Catherine Evans, Team UP Employer Supported Volunteering Manager, and the whole team at Volunteer Centre Camden, as well as the volunteers who gave up their time, energy and good will to complete the roof garden.”

Arlington is the largest mixed use homeless hostel in the UK and helps people to move on to secure homes and more stable futures, and to support homeless people to find a way to independence. This is part of our work on the frontline of the housing crisis - helping people, in all kinds of situations, who face challenges in getting and maintaining a home.
