27-year-old, Hackney resident Ahmet Dalga was struggling to find work, he got in contact with our Employment & Training service, who helped him find full-time work in the security industry. Read his story.
Talk us through your education or employment background?
I finished college and decided to find work and not go down the higher education path. I was in between jobs and found myself unemployed for some time. In 2012 I was out of work and receiving benefits, the JobCentre suggested I study to get a qualification in security and with the Olympic Games coming up I thought it would be a good opportunity to find work. So I did the training, got my qualification and applied to steward for the Games, I did that for two months. I then worked temporary in door supervision, warehouses and retail.
How did you hear about the service?
My mum recommended the service to me as she’d previously got help from the team. I registered to the service and started receiving job alerts via email. I met with Serena, my employment advisor and explained what sort of work I was looking for, my work experience and it took off from there.
What sort of help did you receive from the team?
Serena helped me with my CV, tailoring my cover letter to the job, practise interviews tips. She’s been a big to help to get me to where I am today; it’s good to get a helping-hand.
What are you doing now?
I work full-time as a security officer for the London Overground.
What does the future hold for you?
I’m learning a lot on the job and getting more experience as I go on, there’s a lot of responsibility with security and in a few years I’d like to develop myself in a supervisor or manager role.
Would you recommend the Employment & Training service to family or friends?
Definitely. The team have helped me greatly, they’re friendly and easy to approach and I’d highly recommended them to family and friends.
