Art at Arlington
We have a unique partnership with Creative Space. It is designed to foster creativity, artistic expression and learning and to provide a gateway to employment and training and volunteering opportunities.
About
The Creative Space is a year-round programme of creative workshops for the residents of homeless schemes in Camden. The programme is based in a spacious dedicated art room at Arlington. Now in its sixth year, the programme has been developed by SPACE and Arlington to foster confidence and new skills. Participants are involved in choosing the programme’s content and use the studio for developing their own work as well as engaging with artist-led projects.
Creative Space Participants
Over 200 people from Arlington House and Camden Pathway hostels have come to the Creative Space workshops. Some continue to attend workshops after they have moved on to permanent accommodation. Current workshops include art and drawing, textiles screen printing and paper dressmaking (where a paper wedding dress was made), photography, graphic novel writing and graffiti. Music classes have recorded two albums and performed gigs, and there is also a journalism workshop where residents create a monthly magazine called ‘Emma’. Some of the participants have gone on to courses at City Lit and Goldsmiths. In connection with these workshops, there is an annual exhibition which showcases and publicises what has been created during workshop; as well as pop-up events in quirky locations across London. The Creative Space has collaborated with the Wellcome Trust, Whitechapel Gallery, Spitalfields Art Market, The One Festival of Homeless Art, Café Art, Camden Community Awards, the Jewish Museum, and other organisations.
